A 64 TB Synology Media NAS for Vertumnus Productions

Footage and photos were scattered across many hard drives and Dropbox, with duplicate copies and no clear structure. We brought it all together on a Synology rackmount NAS, organised it, and locked it down so each person only sees what they need.

The Challenge

Media split across drives and Dropbox

The Solution

Synology RS2825RP+ media NAS

The Problem

Vertumnus Productions is a media company in Camden, London, working with large video and photo files. Over time their media had ended up on many separate hard drives, with more of it in Dropbox. The same footage often existed in several places, and nobody could be sure which copy was the latest.

Finding an old project meant plugging in drives one by one. There was also no single place to control who could see what, and no clear backup of the whole library.

The Solution

We looked at how much media they held and how the team used it, then recommended and supplied a Synology RackStation RS2825RP+. It is a 16-bay rackmount NAS with redundant power supplies, set up with 64 TB of storage. We added a media asset management (MAM) setup to keep the library organised.

  • One clear folder structureWe created top-level Archive, Movies and Photos folders and moved the media in from the old drives and Dropbox, so each project now has one home.
  • Office Mac backupsThe office Macs back up to the NAS with Time Machine, so their work is copied to the NAS automatically.
  • Shared permissions and limited staff accessShared folders are open to the people who need them. Other staff have limited access and only see the folders their work requires.
  • Multi-factor authenticationStaff sign-ins to the NAS use a second step, so a stolen password alone is not enough to get at the media.

The Results

Vertumnus Productions' media library now lives in one secure, organised place on the NAS instead of across separate drives and Dropbox, with access controlled person by person.
