Microsoft is killing Skype Classic today. Skype for the desktop will still be available for download. However, the company plans to make it harder for users to find. Windows 10 includes a “Store App” version of Skype, which has fewer features than Skype for the desktop app.

  • “Skype for Windows 10” is included with Windows 10. It comes from the Windows Store. It’s a UWP app with various limitations, unlike old desktop apps. This is called a “Trusted Microsoft Store App” in the Start menu and has a Windows 10-style tile icon.
  • “Skype for Windows” is available for download from Microsoft’s Skype website. If you have the old version of Skype installed, it’ll install this new version automatically soon. In addition, it has extra features because it doesn’t have to worry about running on old operating systems like Windows 7. For example, the start menu shows “Desktop App” as the name and has the traditional Skype bubble icon.

It’s a little confusing, but it becomes a lot easier when we look at the facts. Skype 8 has now been released, and both versions of Skype provide an excellent user experience. However, if you download the desktop version of Skype, you can enjoy a range of added features. Despite this, both versions are fully compatible and can run simultaneously on your desktop or laptop.
