Computers are prone to build up dust and debris. The more you use your computer, the more dust accumulates on the fan and heat sink. This can lead to overheating and serious damage such as a short circuit. To keep your computer running smoothly, it’s important to clean up the dust on it.
We explain how to clean a dusty computer and why it’s important to do so.
Disconnect Power cord
To clean your computer from dust and debris, it’s important to ensure that it is disconnected from the main power supply first. Locate the power cord coming from your computer and disconnect it from the main power supply.

Open Side Panel
There are two screws on each side of the computer – unscrew both of these furthest away from the back panel. Once these have been unscrewed, slide the side cover towards the rear and it should come off easily with a little effort.
Removing the side panel can be frustrating, especially for those who are not experienced with it. Take your time and think logically when putting it back together, and you’ll be fine.
Check the computer for dust
Take a look at how dusty your computer components are and clean off any particles with an anti-static brush. Use the brush to sweep away any dust and debris that may have accumulated in the blades of the fan, thus preventing it from spinning freely.
You can also use an air compressor can spray all the dust and other particles that have accumulated in your computer case. You’ll obviously need to remove any cables and take out any parts from the casing, before doing so. Follow the instructions on the can of air and hold upright while spraying. Spray the front vents, CPU fan, graphics cooler, heat sinks, power supply, rear vents and any other place where there is obvious buildup. Cover hidden spaces to ensure all surfaces are reached.
How often should I clean my Computer?
Computers accumulate dust and other particles over time which clog the internal components and interfere with their performance. By regularly maintaining your computer with a light dusting for at least six months, or more often if you have pets or live in an especially dusty environment, you can keep your computer running smoothly.
